Baku was founded in the 11th century and has palaces and mosques from the 14th and 15th centuries. It is the oldest site of oil production, having been discovered in Baku during the mid-nineteenth century. The discovery of oil created a boom-town of this coastal city. Baku produced half of the world's supply of oil at the turn of the century and is known as the birthplace of the modern oil industry.
