MAYOR LEE P. BROWN UNVEILS CITY HALL DISPLAY HONORING HOUSTON’S SISTER CITIES

HOUSTON - Highlighting the value of people-to-people contact in strengthening Houston’s international ties, Mayor Lee P. Brown today unveiled a permanent display outside Council Chambers in City Hall honoring Houston’s 14 sister cities.

“Houston has more sister city relationships than any other city in Texas,” said Mayor Brown, in unveiling the etched-glass world map displaying each of the cities and Houston. “Our sister city ties remind us that globalization is not really about businesses, processes or governments. It’s about people building relationships and what people can accomplish working together.”

Houston is paired through official sister city relationships, ratified by the mayors and city councils of the respective cities, with: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Baku, Azerbaijan; Chiba, Japan; Grampian Region (Aberdeen), Scotland; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Huelva, Spain; Istanbul, Turkey; Leipzig, Germany; Nice, France; Perth, Australia; Shenzhen, China; Stavanger, Norway; Taipei, Taiwan; and Tyumen, Russia.

“Sister city relationships foster cultural, educational and economic exchange between everyday citizens, who are volunteer participants. This adds an important dimension to Houston’s global activities and we are thrilled that the Mayor has expressed the City’s commitment to this effort through this beautiful display,” said Harry Gee, president of Sister Cities of Houston, an umbrella organization for the 14 sister city associations.

International Children’s Parade

Once again, Sister Cities of Houston will partner with the Houston International Festival to produce this procession of elementary school students wearing costumes typical of their sponsoring sister cities. A tribute to children all over the world, the International Children’s Parade takes place at the Opening Ceremonies of the Festival on Friday, April 22, 2005.
