The <city w:st="on"></city>Houston-Leipzig sister city program will be recognized at Sister Cities International’s 54<sup>th </sup>Annual Conference in Albuquerque, <state w:st="on"></state><state w:st="on"></state>New Mexico.</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial"><span style="font-family: Arial"></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial"><span style="font-family: Arial"> </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial"><span style="font-family: Arial"></span><span style="font-family: Arial">In honor of the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in <country-region w:st="on"></country-region><country-region w:st="on"></country-region>East Germany, the HLSCA raised over $120,000 for the commission of a stained-glass Peace Window to be installed in the historic St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.  They also commissioned a 7-part cantata, the Peace Cantata or Friedenskantate to mark the occasion.  An 80-person delegation from <city w:st="on"></city>Houston traveled to Leipzig for the celebration. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial"><span style="font-family: Arial"></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial"><span style="font-family: Arial"><span style="font-family: Arial">To show its appreciation to the City of <city w:st="on"></city><city w:st="on"></city>Houston for their friendship, the city of <city w:st="on"></city><city w:st="on"></city>Leipzig dedicated a tram car to <city w:st="on"></city><city w:st="on"></city>Houston by affixing the Houston city seal to the car, which is in common circulation.  Houston City Council Member Anne Clutterbuck drove the tram car through the streets of Leipzig the day it was dedicated. The second-oldest university in <country-region w:st="on"></country-region><country-region w:st="on"></country-region>Germany, the University of Leipzig, also worked with the HLSCA to bring an exhibit about rare texts to the Houston Public Library, so that all Houstonians could learn about the rich history of its sister city.</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial"></span></span></span></p>

City Council approved the establishment of a sister city relationship between Houston and Karachi, Pakistan, earlier this month.<span>  </span>The Houston-Karachi Sister City Association becomes the seventeenth in a network of “citizen diplomacy” relationships for Houston, under the umbrella of Sister Cities of Houston. </font></span><span style="font-size: 10pt"><font face="Arial"> </font></span></p>

The Houston-Shenzhen Sister City Association is sponsoring the exhibit which features the work of Houston-based photographer Jim Olive as well as cultural handicrafts from Shenzhen.</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial"> </span></p>

Sister city pairings are official relationships ratified by the mayors and city councils of the respective cities. </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial">Houston’s sister city program is run by volunteers who form 16 associations and the umbrella organization Sister Cities of Houston, Inc. Program components include volunteer leadership, local government involvement, community involvement, and number and quality of programs that emphasize role of community members as leaders in diplomacy.</span></span></p>
