About the Relationship:
Houston and Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, became Sister Cities in 2001. Mayor Lee P. Brown led a delegation to the UAE to witness the signing of the agreement officially linking the two cities. One of only three Muslim Sister Cities in Houston, it is a natural partnership, since both municipalities provide oil and gas to the rest of the world.
For the past five years the Abu Dhabi Sister City organization has hosted/co-hosted a breakfast during Houston’s annual Offshore Technology Conference. The guest list grows larger each year as word of our “Southern hospitality” has spread.
Several of our board members travel frequently to Abu Dhabi on business. While there, they meet with government officials and encourage more interaction between the two cities. We look forward to new exchanges, especially in the areas of medical and community service.
