About the Relationship:

Founded in 2003 as a result of strong oil and shipping industries in Houston and in Tampico, the organization has since been actively engaged in promotion, health and goodwill. A delegation from Tampico participated in the International Festival during their visit to Houston in April 2003. During this visit the mayors of Houston and Tampico formally signed a document establishing a reciprocal relationship to promote business, education and culture. Later on, an enthusiastic group of leaders organized a non-profit organization called the Houston-Tampico Sister City Association (HTSCA).

HTSCA helps build long-term relationships between Houston and Tampico by sponsoring a variety of activities. Among their many programs, the association has hosted a photo exhibit “Historic Tampico: The Birth of Mexico’s Oil Industry” in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Tampico and Mexico City. It also co-sponsored the “Promotoras” seminar in which health-care workers from Tampico share with Houston public health workers a program for health promotion among disadvantaged patients.
